Yamaha Advanced Sound Technology

Relying on over a century of experience creating acoustic pianos, Yamaha uses its technical ability and attention to detail bring the Clavinova sound one step closer to perfection.

Graded Hammer

Yamaha acoustic pianos are famed for their responsive sensitivity, rapid repetition and uniform feel, as well as for their reliable performance over time. And because Yamaha is one of the rare manufacturers that produce both acoustic and digital pianos, its engineers have an advantage over other digital piano manufacturers, the outcome of which can be understood perfectly in the graded hammer keyboard.

To recreate the sound that emerges from a Yamaha acoustic piano, three important features must be understood in relationship to the sound:

Advanced Sound Technology
Having a graded hammer keyboard means that the key weight is graded from heavier in the lower registers to lighter on the higher end.

  1. The keyboard, which has variables concerned with the size of key, material of key covering, distance of key to hammer (key-dip), and whether the edge of the key tops are squared or rounded.
  2. The action, which is the mechanism from key to string, and has considerations such as the leverage ratio from key to hammer, weight of action parts, key release action, number of moving parts, and complexity of the mechanism itself.
  3. The actual sounds heard from various strikes of a key

In order to create the best digital piano action, Yamaha engineers took all three into consideration. The result is Yamaha's patented Graded Hammer Action for the Clavinova. This action uses a weighted mechanism and grade-weighted keys (gradually heavier, top to bottom) to provide a "natural feel" so transferring from a Clavinova to an acoustic piano is seamless. With the proper weighting, a pianist gains the needed finger strength to play a piano. Along with weighting, the way the action plays the notes gives the pianist ultimate control of the sound.

Over the years, Yamaha has consistently won awards for the best piano sound and feel. By using the patented Graded Hammer Action, this trend is continuing into the future.

The reason higher level pianists desire a grand piano's action is for its better response and much faster repetition speed. This improved action allows for a world class concert instrument.

To address this issue, Yamaha has created the patented Graded Hammer 3 action. This update of the GH action adds sensors to the existing system, recreating such acoustic responses as damper position and faster repetition speeds. With this level of realism, any pianist will find the GH3 action is the best at recreating any type of performance.

Natural Wood

Natural Wood Keyboard

- White Keys Only -

Yamaha engineers understand that simply putting wooden keys on a digital piano will not recreate a better, more realistic action. What's important is recreating the natural, balanced weight and key mass to the authentic wood touch and feel - including rounded key tips and other genuine key shape features.

Natural Wood Keyboard technology has a playability and expressiveness that goes beyond anything ever available in an electronic instrument. The sound response varies according to velocity and key position (low notes having a slightly delayed response), and the characteristic weight gradations of the keys - heavy in the lower end, light in the upper keys - make you feel as if you're playing a real grand piano.

Experience this amazing sound by:

  1. Playing any key on an acoustic piano and playing the same keys on a Clavinova.
